Markets Overview

Markets were mixed Wednesday. The TSX notched another record high on strong earnings and firmer metals prices, and the Dow also closed at a fresh record, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq pulled back slightly, ending the S&P 500's four-day winning streak.

Canadian Equities (TSX)

The S&P/TSX Composite rose 344.83 points (+1%) to a record 36,146.42, led by metal mining shares and a strong earnings beat from Shopify, surpassing Tuesday's record close of 35,801.59.

U.S. Equities (S&P 500, Dow, Nasdaq)

The Dow added 263.24 points (+0.49%) to a record 54,349.12, boosted by Nvidia, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.17% to 7,723.55 and the Nasdaq fell 0.83% to 26,363.44, as a heavy slate of corporate earnings drove mixed moves.

Bond Yields & Interest Rates

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield held steady near 4.62%, little changed from Tuesday.

Canadian Dollar (CAD/USD)

The loonie was little changed, with USD/CAD last near 1.4072 (roughly CAD/USD 0.711).

Commodities (Oil & Gold)

Oil extended its decline, with WTI easing to about US$75.70 a barrel on continued hopes for a Strait of Hormuz resolution. Gold jumped about 2.9% to roughly US$4,196 an ounce, as falling oil eased inflation pressure and pulled real yields lower, making gold more competitive against Treasuries.

Global Markets Snapshot

Gold and oil kept moving in opposite directions, a pattern tied to hopes for a U.S.-Iran deal over the Strait of Hormuz. A heavy earnings slate — including Shopify, Brookfield Asset Management, Manulife, and Nutrien — added to the day's swings.
