Markets fell today under the combined weight of a fresh oil spike, a sharp AI-sector selloff, and mounting anticipation of Wednesday's Federal Reserve decision. Friday's hotter-than-expected core inflation reading cemented rate-hike bets, and the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield breached 5% today for the first time since 2023. A weekend call from Anthropic and OpenAI's CEOs to deliberately slow AI development also rattled technology and semiconductor stocks, adding a new source of volatility heading into the Fed's biggest decision in years.
The S&P/TSX Composite rebounded Friday, gaining 0.54% to 35,697.49 on strength in technology, materials, and real estate shares. It gave some of that back today, trading down about 50 points to near 35,647 in late-morning trading, as weakness in base metals offset strength in energy shares as oil climbed further.
U.S. stocks rallied Friday as oil eased and the CPI report came in close to expectations: the Dow rose 0.98% to 52,573.29, the S&P 500 gained 0.86% to 7,656.98, and the Nasdaq jumped 0.96% to 26,333.04. That reversed today: the S&P 500 fell about 0.75% to near 7,600, the Dow slipped 0.28% to near 52,425, and the Nasdaq dropped 1.17% to near 26,025, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF down more than 4% on the AI-slowdown news.
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield breached 5% today for the first time since 2023, extending its climb from Thursday's 4.91% as oil-driven inflation fears and rising Fed rate-hike bets continued to feed off each other.
Friday's August CPI report showed headline inflation at 3.4% year over year (+0.4% on the month) and core inflation at 2.4% year over year, with the monthly core reading of 0.3% running a tenth of a point hotter than forecast. That reinforced bets on a rate hike at Wednesday's September 15–16 FOMC meeting, with odds now ranging from roughly 60% (CME FedWatch) to as high as 78–83% on some prediction markets — a dramatic shift from the near-70% odds of a hold priced in before Fed Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole speech last month. Wednesday's meeting also includes the Fed's updated economic projections.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay Saturday calling for AI labs to deliberately slow the pace of frontier-model development so safety research can keep up, proposing independent evaluators inside labs and eventual international limits on high-risk capabilities. OpenAI's Sam Altman publicly agreed the same day, and OpenAI has reportedly delayed its planned 2026 IPO over unresolved safety and alignment concerns. The news pressured AI and semiconductor stocks today on concern that a coordinated slowdown could weigh on the capital-spending growth that has driven much of the past year's tech rally.
Oil remains elevated near four-month highs after a drone attack forced Saudi Arabia to shut down a major crude pipeline over the weekend, with WTI trading near $100 a barrel today. Gold has fallen for three straight weeks and traded near $4,300 an ounce, weighed down by oil-driven inflation concerns and rising Fed rate-hike bets that have reduced its appeal as a safe haven.
The loonie has been pulled in two directions: rising oil prices offered support, while broader U.S. dollar strength tied to Fed rate-hike bets pushed the other way. USD/CAD traded near 1.3918 today, up modestly on the day.
