This Week In Review

It was a volatile week. The TSX and Dow both set fresh records Tuesday and Wednesday on easing Middle East tensions and strong earnings, before pulling back Thursday as oil prices and bond yields rose. Friday brought a rebound after a weak U.S. jobs report boosted rate-cut hopes. Gold was the standout story, climbing from around US$4,070 an ounce last Friday to above US$4,350 by this Friday morning — one of its sharpest weekly moves this year.

What Is Brewing Over The Weekend

Talks between the U.S., Iran, and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz have reportedly reached the final stages, with a proposed shipping-route agreement said to be close to signing. Because the strait carries a large share of the world's oil, any weekend announcement — good or bad — could move oil prices sharply before markets reopen Monday.

Week Ahead: What To Watch

Next week's headline event is the U.S. Consumer Price Index on Wednesday, August 12, which will shape expectations for the Federal Reserve's next move. Other releases include the RBA rate decision Tuesday, U.S. Producer Price Index and UK GDP Thursday, and U.S. Retail Sales and consumer sentiment data Friday. No major Canadian data is scheduled this week; the Bank of Canada's next rate decision remains September 2.

What This Means

Weekend headlines — especially anything on the Strait of Hormuz — can move markets sharply before Monday's open. If a headline over the weekend has you wondering whether to change something in your portfolio or plan, that is a good reason to book a 30-minute session on Monday rather than make a decision based on a single weekend news cycle.
